Even the smallest of hockey fans have already heard his name multiple times. He’s the most highly touted prospect since Sidney Crosby who was taken first overall in 2005. He was given exceptional player status so that he could enter the OHL a year earlier than usual, an exception only given to 3 players in OHL history. Lastly, he’s the unanimous choice for the first overall pick in this years NHL draft. I’m talking about the future NHL superstar, Connor McDavid. Right now the NHL playoffs are still on going, but it’s a guarantee that once this season is finished all eyes will be on McDavid. People are well aware of his hockey skills but who is this kid, and how did he get so good are some of the questions that are on most people’s minds. This article will take you through some of his life and make predictions about his NHL future. To learn more about The SportScreen, which will be discussed later on in this article, click here now!

The Early Days

Connor was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario in 1997 and it didn’t take long for his parents to realize that Connor was a special kid. By the age of three Connor was able to skate on his own, and from there they could only wonder how naturally great he was going to become. Even during his first year of hockey at the age of four, his parents believed he saw things differently than other kids and was born to play the game.  Connor went on to play for the York-Simcoe Express and then the Toronto Malboros AAA minor midget team and was considered head and shoulders above others despite being one of the younger players on the team. This is when the hockey world really began to take notice, and it was really just the beginning for a young hockey player.

In McDavid’s final year with the Malboros, he amassed 79 goals and 130 assists in 88 games. This incredible level of production was enough to convince Hockey Canada to grant him exceptional player status, allowing him to enter the OHL draft one year early. To nobody’s surprise he was selected first overall by the Erie Otters, and he certainly hasn’t disappointed since. As a kid playing as the youngest player in the league, he recorded 66 points in 63 games, enough to earn him the OHL’s top rookie award. His second year was even better as he finished with 99 points in 56 games, and increased his plus minus by an astonishing +71. The maturity in his game was enough to convince Otters staff to make McDavid the captain of the team for the 2014-15 season. His final season was nothing short of amazing as he finished with 120 points in only 47 games, a season cut short by a broken hand during an ill-advised fight. For his incredible season he was awarded the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL player of the year. McDavid finished his OHL career by registering 49 points in the Otters playoff run before being eliminated by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. After this incredible final season with the Otters, McDavid had only one thing on his mind, the 2015 NHL Draft.

How Did McDavid Get This Good?

As you can see from the video above, it isn’t just all natural skill that makes McDavid so good. It takes practice, and in his case it took a lot of shots at a piece of plywood to hone in his elite skills. This is something we see from a lot of the elite hockey players. Sidney Crosby’s father used to have him shoot at a clothes dryer to improve the accuracy of his shot, so we know that working on your shot is incredibly important when training. The unfortunate part is that even the most elite players miss the net from time to time and this can end up damaging your property. This is where the The SportScreen can help save you time and money.

If Connor McDavid’s father had told him to keep shooting at The SportScreen until he put a hole through it he’d still be shooting today! To see The SportScreen in action click here now.

What’s Next For Connor McDavid?

Draft

The only thing on Connor McDavid’s mind right now is the NHL draft. He’s currently the unanimous choice as the number 1 selection, and unless something surprising happens he’ll end up on the Edmonton Oilers this June. After that the sky is the limit for him. It’s most likely that he’ll start the 2015-16 season on the Oilers as their second line center, but it won’t be long before he overtakes former number one pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for the first line center position. McDavid is a generational talent, and most expect him to become the face of the league within the next few years. In reality, there’s nothing that can stop McDavid from becoming one of the best to ever play the game and the Oilers are certainly hoping that happens. One thing is for sure, all eyes will be on him at the start of next season.
